20 free things to do in Brisbane parks (no membership, no booking)
Brisbane is one of the great free-things-to-do cities in Australia. The parks are generous, the climate is mostly forgiving, and the council quietly maintains hundreds of facilities that cost you nothing. Here are twenty activities — all free, all available right now, all in your neighbourhood somewhere.
Active and outdoorsy
- Use a public BBQ. Brisbane has hundreds of free electric BBQs. Bring sausages and tongs, push the button, you're cooking.
- Walk a track. Mt Coot-tha alone has 30+ km of bushwalking tracks. Toohey Forest, Boondall Wetlands and Karawatha Forest add hundreds more.
- Cycle the bikeways. Bicentennial Bikeway, Norman Creek, Kedron Brook — all free, all flat, all family-friendly.
- Free outdoor gym. Most large parks have outdoor exercise equipment — pull-up bars, parallel bars, leg presses. Use them.
- Skate, scoot, BMX. Brisbane has excellent free skate parks at Coorparoo, Paddington, Wynnum and many more.
With kids
- Playground hopping. Visit three different playgrounds in one morning. Kids love the variety.
- Streets Beach (South Bank). Free lagoon-style swimming, lifeguarded, with shaded sand.
- Splash pads and water play. Roma Street, Calamvale, Riverhills and others have free water play areas.
- Junior parkrun (Sundays). Free 2km timed event for ages 4–14.
- Library story time in the park. Brisbane libraries run free outdoor story times in summer — check What's On.
Quiet and reflective
- Read a book under a tree. Free, restorative, undervalued.
- Bird watching. Brisbane parks are loud with rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras, ibises, ducks and water dragons.
- Sketch or photograph. Bring a sketchpad or just your phone. Botanic Gardens, Roma Street and Mt Coot-tha all reward an hour with a camera.
- Yoga or stretching. Many parks host free community yoga (check What's On). If not, just bring a mat.
- Watch the sunset. Kangaroo Point, Wilson's Outlook, Mt Coot-tha lookout — all free, all spectacular.
Social and community
- Join parkrun (Saturdays, 7am). Free 5km timed run/walk. Welcoming community.
- Free council events. Markets, ranger talks, mobile playgroups, fitness classes — all listed in FindMyPark's What's On calendar.
- Pickup sports. Kick a footy, throw a frisbee, play cricket on a Saturday afternoon — most parks have informal games you can join.
- BYO games night. Cards, Uno, a board game on a picnic rug at sunset — works as well as any indoor venue.
- Just be outside. Truly. Sitting on a rug under a tree with a coffee and your kids running around is a free, full-quality afternoon. We make it more complicated than it needs to be.
How to find what's near you
Open the FindMyPark map, turn on the filters that match your activity (BBQ, Playground, Off-leash, Skate, Water play, etc.) and start with parks within 5km of home. The What's On calendar (Premium) shows free events happening this week. Start small, go often. Brisbane parks reward repeat visits — every season looks different.
