Brisbane's best riverside parks for summer

When the temperature climbs above 30°C, the Brisbane River is your best friend. The parks along its banks catch the breeze, the water reflects the heat, and there's almost always a ferry stop nearby for an easy escape route. Here are the riverside parks worth knowing — and what makes each one special.

South Bank Parklands

The famous one, and for good reason. South Bank has Streets Beach (a lagoon-style swimming pool right next to the river — free, lifeguarded), the Boardwalk, restaurants, multiple playgrounds, the Wheel of Brisbane, and miles of shaded paths. It's busy on weekends but the scale of the place absorbs crowds well. Best for: families with kids, lazy afternoons, taking visiting friends to see the city.

New Farm Park

Brisbane's best all-rounder. New Farm Park has the giant rotunda, the rose garden, the playground (fenced, shaded, world-class), BBQs and shelters for hire, the river ferry next door at New Farm Park terminal, and easy walks along the Brisbane Powerhouse. Sunday afternoons here are a Brisbane ritual.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs

Famous for the cliffs themselves (free climbing! free abseiling on weekends!), but the parks at the top and bottom are equally special. The cliff-top has shaded shelters, BBQs and the best skyline view in Brisbane — especially at sunset. The bottom has the river path, ferry stop, and wedding photographer favourite spots.

Sandgate Foreshore

Bayside rather than river, but worth the drive. Long shaded esplanade, off-leash dog area, BBQs, playgrounds at Pelican Park, and a 7-day flat walking path. The sea breeze in February is a lifesaver.

Toowong Memorial Park & Jack Cook Memorial Park

Across the river from each other and joined by the Bicentennial Bikeway. Both have shaded lawns, river views, playgrounds, and ferry access. The bikeway between them is one of the prettiest stretches of Brisbane on a bike.

Wilson's Outlook & Captain Burke Park

Less famous but stunning. Wilson's Outlook (Bowen Hills) has one of the best CBD views in Brisbane and is walkable from the Story Bridge. Captain Burke Park (Kangaroo Point) sits right under the bridge and is a perfect picnic spot for sunset.
