Birthday parties at Brisbane parks — booking, BYO and BCC rules
A park birthday party is one of the great Brisbane parenting cheat codes — outdoors, low-pressure, no carpet to vacuum afterwards, and the kids tire themselves out for free. But there are real rules around booking shelters, what you can and can't bring, and which parks actually work for a 6-year-old's party of 25. Here's the practical guide we wish we'd had before our first one.
Step 1 — Choose the right park
Not every park works for parties. Look for:
- A bookable shelter — covered, with picnic tables and electricity for catering or party lights.
- A playground within 30 metres — kids will spend 80% of the party there.
- Toilets within 50 metres — non-negotiable for any kid's party.
- Easy parking for 8–12 cars — guests will arrive late and cranky if it's a 10-minute walk in.
- Lawn space for games — for tag, parachute games or a quick footy.
Brisbane City Council manages around 80 bookable park sites. Top picks for kids' parties: New Farm Park (multiple shelters, huge playground), JC Slaughter Falls (shaded, scenic, good for older kids), Kedron Brook Park (central, big lawn), Wynnum Foreshore (sea breeze, water play), Frew Park (modern playground, fenced, central).
Step 2 — Book the shelter
Booking is done through Brisbane City Council. Cost is typically $50–$150 depending on the park, shelter size and day (weekends cost more). Bookings can be made up to 12 months in advance — and the popular shelters at New Farm, South Bank and Mt Coot-tha get booked out 4–6 months ahead for weekend parties. Book early.
- Visit brisbane.qld.gov.au/book-a-park
- Search for the park and shelter you want.
- Check availability and submit a booking request.
- Pay online once approved (usually 2–5 business days).
- Print or save the booking confirmation — bring it on the day.
What you CAN bring
- Picnic food, cake, drinks (non-alcoholic in most parks)
- Plates, cutlery, tablecloths, bunting tied to the shelter posts
- Small games — parachute, footy, hula hoops, soft frisbee
- Speaker for background music (kept at conversational volume)
- Esky with ice — most shelters don't have refrigeration
- Small first-aid kit, sunscreen, water bottles
What you CAN'T bring (without a permit)
- Jumping castles — most Brisbane parks ban these without a separate permit and proof of insurance. Check your specific park's rules.
- Marquees larger than 3x3m — usually require a permit.
- Petting zoos, ponies, pony rides — require permits and proof of insurance.
- Amplified PA systems — generally not allowed.
- Alcohol — banned in most Brisbane parks unless in a designated alcohol-permitted area.
- Helium balloons — discouraged due to wildlife and litter risk.
- Confetti, glitter or piñatas with confetti fillings — leave no trace is the rule.
Use the FindMyPark "Bookable Sites" filter to see which parks support marquees, jumping castles and petting zoos — some do, with the right permit. Our Best birthday party parks list is a good starting point.
Food ideas that survive a Brisbane afternoon
Food sits in heat at park parties. Stick to:
- Sandwiches, wraps, sushi rolls (kept iced until eating)
- Fruit platters (cut just before serving)
- Sausage rolls, mini quiches, party pies (warmed at home, wrapped in foil)
- Plain biscuits, cupcakes, fairy bread (the park birthday classic)
- Iceblocks for the kids — frozen freezies in the esky last 2 hours and are a hit
Avoid: anything with mayo, raw fish, soft cheeses or chocolate icing in summer. They go bad fast.
Weather backup plan
Brisbane storms in summer are sudden and intense. Always have a Plan B:
- Pick a park where the shelter is fully covered with side panels.
- Have a "rain plan" message ready to send to all guests by 8am on the day.
- Check the radar at BOM Brisbane radar the morning of.
- If you cancel, BCC offers a refund or rebooking up to 24 hours before — check your booking terms.
Day-of timeline
- 60 minutes before: Arrive, set up tablecloths, decorations, food on table.
- 15 minutes before: Greet early guests, set up games.
- 0–30 minutes: Free play, snacks out, parents chat.
- 30–60 minutes: Organised games, parachute, treasure hunt.
- 60–75 minutes: Cake, "Happy Birthday", presents.
- 75–90 minutes: More play, then party bags as they leave.
- +15 minutes after end: Pack up, leave the shelter spotless.
90 minutes is the sweet spot for ages 4–8. Older kids (8+) can run 2 hours. Anything longer and the parents start checking their watches.
