Brisbane is blessed with hundreds of public parks that offer free electric BBQs, shaded picnic shelters and family-friendly facilities — but a great BBQ takes a little planning. This guide walks you through everything from finding the right park, to booking a shelter, to what to pack so the day goes smoothly.
The first decision is location. For groups of 6 or more, look for parks with multiple BBQs and large covered shelters so you're not waiting in line. Use FindMyPark's Best BBQ parks list to filter by BBQ count, then narrow further by features like playgrounds, toilets and parking.
For small groups (2–5 people), almost any council park with a single BBQ will do. For larger groups, bookable shelters at parks like New Farm Park, JC Slaughter Falls and South Bank are popular but fill up months in advance — start early.
Brisbane City Council allows shelter bookings at many of its larger parks. Bookings cost around $50–$120 depending on the park and size of the shelter, and they guarantee you a spot during peak weekends and school holidays. Visit brisbane.qld.gov.au to check availability.
If you're not booking, arrive early — most popular spots are taken by 9am on a sunny Saturday.
Skip anything that takes more than 15 minutes to cook on a flat hotplate. Sausages, marinated chicken thighs, steak strips, halloumi, prawns and pre-cut veggies all work brilliantly. Bring rolls, salads, dips and fruit so the BBQ doesn't have to do all the heavy lifting.
Avoid bringing raw seafood unless you can cook it within 30 minutes of arrival.
Brisbane summers can shift from sunshine to a thunderstorm in an hour. Check the forecast on the morning of your BBQ. Electric BBQs in council parks are not affected by total fire bans, but bring a backup plan if storms are forecast — South Bank's covered shelters are a good wet-weather standby.
